His lips are at her nape
She feels his breath expel
The shortness is the tell

He pulls from their embrace
And leaves behind a trace
Of his familiar smell
It lingers for a spell

She knows they can't go back
They've fallen off the track
What kills about the wreck
Is both of them were circumspect

And maybe it could have been saved
If they hand't gone so out of phase
Inverted signals that canceled out
Empty arms and an open mouth
